Who we need Reporting to the Section Head – Packaging Development, we are looking for a Packaging Development Manager to join our team in Mississauga. You will design and execute key packaging development and research initiatives. You will play a critical role, contributing innovative solutions that will ensure we maintain a competitive position in the market and successfully achieve our business goals. In addition, you will lead, mentor and support 2-3 direct reports and be responsible for the quality of their work and professional development. What’s in it for you Influence, impact, and exposure. You will work closely with Operations, Engineering, Purchasing, and Category to develop and qualify new packaging for growth, sustainability and cost competitiveness opportunities, and to ensure packaging is developed to fit the intended manufacturing environment at the appropriate economical cost. You will work with QA to ensure new development meets our quality standard. Manage projects. You will develop and drive multiple R & D projects from beginning to finish, including but not limited to ideation, technical scoping, work plan development, initial/pilot/validation trials, project scale-up and closure. You will work cross-functionally with all departments (such as Operation, Purchasing and Marketing), establishing expectations and aligning efforts both internally & externally (suppliers or customers). You  will manage deliverables and effectively communicate status and highlight concerns to all stakeholders, ensuring the successful execution of each project launch. Execute the packaging sustainability strategy. You will drive efforts and innovation that focus on the reduction, recyclability, and compostability of packaging materials from the perspective of our consumers and the waste diversion community. You will develop documentation and share technical expertise and knowledge about products and materials to grow sustainability awareness across the organization. Mentor. You will support your team of Scientists and Engineers to grow their technical and leadership abilities. Be solution-oriented. You will assess business risk and use data and statistics to influence technical decisions – internally and externally. You will work closely with internal and external manufacturing to seek quality, yield and cost enhancement opportunities. You will gain engagement of business/employees to new techniques and methods beyond the current company exposure. What you bring to the role: The education. You may have a degree in Science or Engineering. You are proficient in the design of experiments and scientific risk/opportunity analysis (Statistical analysis). You have direct packaging or plastics manufacturing experience. You may be Lean Six Sigma or Design for Six Sigma certified. Ideally, you have PMP certification and knowledge in GMP, HACCP and SQF (or equivalent). The industry knowledge. You have 10 years of relevant packaging development experience in the Food and Beverage industry and direct expertise in packaging materials, including common food packaging resins, barrier properties, food-packaging interactions, and packaging making and  converting process. You  understand the competitive set and cost of goods, and how they impact on P&L. In addition, you are a subject matter expert in packaging sustainability, including life-cycle analysis, compostability, and recyclability standards and requirements. The project management. You have demonstrated experience in managing complex projects or initiatives, including ability to develop alternative plans to ensure business goals are met even in the face of ambiguity and conflicting deadlines, in a high-pressure environment. You can quickly assess complex projects to provide and drive business plans on the technical side, supported by analysis and interpretation of data. T he people leadership. You have direct experience spearheading the direct and daily work of a team and influencing teams around you. You have a proven ability to leverage knowledge, drive productivity and process continuous improvement.
